In the 2014 United Nations General Assembly out of the 193 total member countries of the United Nations, this proposal was fully and happily approved by the huge 177 co-sponsoring countries and on 11th of December,2014 United Nations under a resolution of 69/131 proclaimed 21st June will be marked as International yoga day.
The first Yoga Day celebrations were held at the Rajpath which is in New Delhi, where PM Modi along with dignitaries of 84 nations performed a total of 21 yoga asanas and a direct live telecast will be done by many channels. This event bagged India with two Guinness World Records. The first record was for being the world’s largest yoga class featuring a total of 35,985 people and the second one was for the participation of people belonging to 84 nationalities, which are the highest participation till now. During the International Yoga Day event, PM Modi addressed the nation and said,
“From Upanishads, comes the idea of Yoga to transform the human consciousness through control of body and senses through constant practice. The body is the vehicle for the realization of Supreme Being.”
